The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a funding program to support the development of animal drugs for use in minor species, or for minor uses in major species.

The program follows the Minor Use & Minor Species Animal Health Act of 2004, known as the MUMS act, and will provide a total amount of $750,000 in funding for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2009.

According to FDA’s center for Veterinary Medicine, MUMS grants have the purpose of “defraying the costs of qualified safety and effectiveness testing expenses incurred in connection with the development of designated new animal drugs.” Grants for total costs will be available for up to $50,000 per year for up to two years for studies of unusual complexity, duration or size. A third year of funding may be available for long-term toxicology studies, announced the FDA.

Applications will be accepted until July 1, and they are available in the website www.grants.gov. Major species are horses, dogs, cats, cattle, pigs, turkeys and chickens.
